What Happened: Hispanics, including mestizos, indigenous and Afro-descended people from the area today known as Mexico, explored North America almost a century before the British first founded Jamestown. As Michel Gobat reminds in his article "The Invention of Latin America: A Transnational History of Anti-Imperialism, Democracy, and Race", "Arturo Ardao, Miguel Rojas Mix, and Aims McGuinness have revealed [that] the term 'Latin America' had already been used in 1856 by Central Americans and South Americans protesting U.S. expansion into the Southern Hemisphere".
For more than five centuries, historical change here has been entangled with political, economic, social, and cultural Hispanics (whether criollo or mestizo) became the first American citizens in the newly acquired Southwest territory after the Mexican–American War, and remained a majority in several states until the 20th century. As late as 1783, at the end of the American Revolutionary War, Spain held claim to roughly half of today's continental United States. Welcome to Latin American and Caribbean History at Harvard! Led by specialists who are deeply committed to cutting-edge research and pedagogy, we supervise and conduct scholarship that is temporally broad (covering the late pre-Columbian period through the present), geographically expansive (straddling the Americas from north to south, from the Atlantic to European explorers mark the beginning of this era by voyaging from the “Old World” (Europe) to the “New World” (North America and Latin America) in the 15th century.
